Learning as an Eternal Principle

  1. Interview
    1. Part of learning is to be able to ask questions to be able to understand
    2. Learning is the process of becoming aware of things that were always there that we didn’t know before
    3. Excitement
      1. They went above and beyond what they had been assigned by the missionaries.
      2. This kind of excitement begets life long learning
    4. They were taught to learn for themselves
      1. Like Joseph Smith did during the first vision
      2. This is different from how we often learn.
  2. Learning – “Volunary action that leads one closer to God”
    1. All life and truth can lead us closer to God, if it is light, if itis truth.
    2. We don’t really learn sin, addiction, doubt, hate. We do learn virtue, control, faith , love.
      1. agentic – we have to act for learning to occur
      2. growing – in order to grow you have to retain. Learning that grows says within you.
      3. edifying – edifying to you, and edifying to others because you can’t resist sharing it.
    3. Learning is the key to exaltation, but also to happiness in mortality.
  3. Stages
    1. We were learning in the premortal life (D&C 138:56). Apparently we didn’t invent “lessons” here.
    2. We are learning through all of the stages of our lives, we should be open to all stages
    3. We will keep learning after we die. We learn our salvation and exaltation, even beyond the grave.
  4. Big questions
    1. How can we improve our own ability to learn?
      1. We learn through practice combined with appropriate mentoring/feedback/guidance. Learning something helps us learn, and improves our ability to learn more.
    2. How can we help others improve their ability to learn?
      1. Help others to learn to evaluate themselves. Not being a good self evaluator gets us in trouble. Fait is an important element in self-evaluation. Important learning takes great faith because you have to extend yourself. You have to be willing to try new things. We have to continue to be humble even though we learn more things.
  5. Growth of Come Follow Me
    1. Not trying to pattern after an ed psych theorist
    2. the purpose is to prepare spiritually
      1. We have to prepare spiritually to teach – we think, we pray, we prepare our thoughts, presentations
    3. We don’t need new curriculum – we have the scriptures and the words of modern prophets. They are getting shorter to make more room for individual searching.
      1. Let’s help people learn how to draw on those in the best ways to develop greater conversion.
    4. Advice
      1. You are going to be working in teams. You need to work with people in so many different skill sets. You have to be unified, and see things the same.
      2. We need to find ways to help people contribute and ask what they want to even though we have a topic. Give people a chance to go deeper in what they want to learn.
        1. How does that work with the learning outcomes that we have?
        2. Teach people to lean toward and use their agency to choose to do good in the place they are in.
